neighbors are gang reduction in youth development intervention workersand prevention workers who know the names after many years of work of people who live in playand parks in these neighborhoods go to school in these neighborhoods are in their living in these neighborhoods I’m deeply concernedand I will commit everything the city has together with the countyand less to have supervisor Michael Thomas here in the city Council to turn this around I want to thank the folks that are here as I mentioned more Council member Harris Dawson also councilmember Monica Rodriguez who chairs our public safety committee mission presidency sober off elderly PD command staffand officers community leaders that are here with us todayand amazing folks to Margaret teams all those intervention workers who the safest yearand recorded memory lowest homicide second lowest number of homicides fuming 50 years in Los Angelesand most importantly working hard to strengthen relationships even further house number has Dawson myself worked very hard to bring the community safety partnership to Harvard Park one scene is the deadliest place in Los Angeles this is an assignment of five years for officers they can get to know the names of people who are in that neighborhoodand vice versa in those relationships have turned a cornerand Harvard Park in 2017 are no homicides three last year but that’s way down from what we saw year over year over year this is about young people of color being able to have opportunities in their lives maybe become police officers themselves get to know those who police with themand for themand is about hope for the future we have a reason to feel hopeful even in the moments of our most extreme painand that by turning to each other we saw thatand we seen that since NEPSY was taken from us that love that is out thereand I ask everybody is grieving for him to grieve for the families of those other victims as well whose lives which are importantand just a significant what we see now is yet another reason to be hopeful is this coalitionand help the publicand give Nancy’s familyand the family of those other homicide victims at least justice can be served love than violence out there we intend to give space for people to grieve space for people to mourn people to come together right now I want to turn it over to a man who knew NEPSY Morton very closely with him helped his businesses against stood up helped him to make sure he was part of the transformation that this man is leading in his district along Crenshaw Boulevard keeping African American very firm stance that he lived out that if South Los Angeles is to ever have what it deserves if the community is a ever to be treated the way it should be treated that we had to ownand build it for ourselvesand he spent the last half dozen years trying to carry out that vision while he built a very successful music careerand so on his giftand his insistence on us living our best life went from the highest level to developing a really three strong organizationsand businesses in South Los Angeles to the lowest leveland so there were many occasions where I stood with him on that very parking lotand was fascinated by the fact that the small business owner next door knew him by first name as well is the person struggling with addiction or homelessness knew him by his first nameand watched him grow upand so it is a dear I love one that we have lostand a demonstration of the very array that none of us are safe until all of us are safe one of NEPSY’s most well known songs says bullets about while we see an overall reduction in violence still your homicides one 300 fewer shooting 300 fewer victims of violent crime we’ve seen a recent increase in shooting violence in South Los Angeles in 77and particularly impacting after American menand it was causing us growing concernsand we needed those coalitionsleaders those those members of the public that are working to be
